Moving Beyond Two Dimensional Obstetrical Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds have become commonplace in today's modern world; yet, their ability to provide mothers and families with a view of their baby never ceases to be a miracle.
Due to this amazing technology, you can know the gender of your baby as early as seventeen weeks into the pregnancy.
Further still, progress in 3D ultrasound allows you to view a three-dimensional volume image of your developing fetus.
While the standard common obstetric diagnostic mode is 2D scanning, in 3D fetal scanning sound waves sent at different angles capture the image in 3D.
If captured rapidly and animated, the images produce a 4D ultrasound, which involve additional movement.
While 3D is still a picture of the baby, 4D is the live motion of the baby.
While the FDA's limits on obstetrical ultrasound are to protect against harmful side effects, the risk lies in the duration of the ultrasound; whether it is 2D or 3D makes no difference.
In addition to the duration of ultrasound exposure, other risks include the intensity of ultrasound waves and the frequency of ultrasound sessions.
If used properly, there are no physical effects.
Neither the mother nor the fetus can hear or feel ultrasounds; the only indication of the waves is slight warmth, because they are a form of energy.
The biggest risk in 3D ultrasound occurs when women substitute it for prenatal care.
This exam is not under any circumstances to take the place of a complete medical diagnostic ultrasound, or any prenatal medical requirements.
While traditional 2D ultrasounds are done between seventeen and twenty weeks, the best time for a 3D ultrasound is between twenty-four and thirty weeks.
An ultrasound between twenty-eight to thirty weeks may provide better close-up pictures; however, after thirty two weeks there's a chance that the baby may have already descended into the pelvis and getting a 3D image would be impossible.
As always during your pregnancy, consult frequently with your physician and discuss when a 3D ultrasound would be the best for you.
