Usually the herpes simplex virus type one will erupt around your mouth and nose area and last one to two weeks.
So how to get rid of a cold sore? Once you have become aware of the signs of a Herpes Virus appearing the quicker you act the quicker you can get rid of you cold sore.
Usually when the virus starts to appear it will bring with it a whole host of tell tale signs.
To begin with a cold sore in the prodromal stage will start with some irritation in a targeted area around your mouth, this in turn will follow by some burning and irresistibly itchy sensations.
During this time (as hard as it can be) it is important to avoid touching, scratching or rubbing your virus.
With the virus being highly contagious the more you touch it the more it spread and the longer it will take to heal.
Instead of scratching your cold sore use a clean flannel or cloth, so very hot water and an antibacterial soap, gently dab the area, cleaning any pus away.
This will minimize infection.
Be sure not to use the cloth again before it has been sterilised to rid any of the infection.
Please do be careful not to over clean or scrub the cold sore as this may cause further irritation and lead to secondary infection which will delay the healing process.
Once the herpes virus and surrounding area has been completely cleaned and dried you can use one of the many over the counter remedies or simply use a petroleum jelly to coat the infection helping to keep irritation to a minimum and further infections out.
Before you apply the cream ensure your hands are thoroughly cleaned and germ free, washed with hot soapy water, work the cream from the edges to the inside to help avoid spreading the virus outwards.
Use a generous amount to the area round the cold sore too.
There are stronger antiviral creams available from your doctor by prescription if you have had an outbreak for more than a couple of weeks or they are occurring frequently.
