- 1). Place a ring on fire pit blocks on the ground where you want your pit. These blocks have a trapezoidal shape with sides that bevel inward and naturally curve into a circle. Your location should be as level as possible.
- 2). Mark the inner and outer outlines of the ring on the ground with spray chalk, then remove the blocks and the ring.
- 3). Dig an 8-inch deep trench between the two chalk circles with a spade. Use a level to ensure that the bottom of the trench is perfectly horizontal.
- 4). Prepare a batch of ready-mix concrete following the instructions on the package. You can mix the concrete with water in a tub using a shovel, but if your trench is large you may want to consider renting a small cement mixer.
- 5). Pour the concrete into the trench, filling it to 3 inches below ground level. Smooth the surface of the concrete with a trowel.
- 6). Allow the concrete to harden for 24 to 48 hours, depending on the instructions listed on the package.
- 7). Lay the first circle of blocks onto the concrete ring.
- 8). Apply a bead of masonry adhesive from a caulking gun to the surface of the blocks, applying it in a zigzag pattern.
- 9). Place a second ring on blocks onto the first, centering them over the seams of the first ring like bricks in a wall.
- 10
Continue adding blocks, glued in place with masonry adhesive, until your fire pit reaches the desired height. - 11
Fill the pit with 6 inches of coarse gravel and small rocks. - 12
Place an iron fire ring into the pit, centered in the middle. Adjust it so that its top is even with the top of the block ring. - 13
Fill the gap between the iron ring and block ring with more small rocks.
