- 1). Pull the cap off the sparkplug on the front of the Briggs & Stratton engine. This is to prevent the engine from accidentally starting while you work on it.
- 2). Remove the cables from the battery. Unscrew the black battery cable and then unscrew the red battery cable with the proper-sized wrenches.
- 3). Unscrew the nut holding the red battery cable to the side of the starter with a 1/4-inch wrench. The starter is bolted to the side of the Briggs & Stratton engine and is the size of a soda can.
- 4). Pull out the plastic electrical connector pushed into the top of the starter.
- 5). Unscrew the two bolts holding the starter to the engine block with a 1/4-inch wrench. Pull the starter down and off the engine.
- 6). Push the new starter into place, so the gears on the starter wedge into the gears on the engine. Tighten the starter onto the engine block with the two bolts.
- 7). Push the electrical connector into the top of the starter. Tighten the red cable back onto the side of the starter with the nut and a wrench.
- 8). Tighten the black cable and then the red cable back onto the battery.
- 9). Push the cap back on the sparkplug.
