Prostate Cancer Survivor Writes About How Cancer Changes Love and Relationships

Like many men, I wanted sex and found that my body was not cooperating all the time.
I ignored signs.
Finally, close friends told me that I should seek medical advice.
After a few medical tests the doctor diagnosed me with Prostate Cancer.
I was shocked.
For two months after the Prostate Cancer diagnosis I was in denial.
I just didn't move quickly to deal with the Prostate Caner.
In retrospect, I would not recommend denial or delay to anyone, but I'm human and it happened.
I really needed help.
My friends pushed me to get into action and to research everything.
They helped me to find a doctor who was an expert in his field.
The doctor I chose invented the nerve-sparing procedure that ultimately has enabled me to be more functional than many other men who have not had this procedure.
Resuming a more normal sex life after the prostate was removed took about five years.
It involved a lot of heartache.
When my body started responding, the first device I tried to help me with an erection was a pump.
What a hassle! Pumping it up and letting the ring flop into place over the penis was painful and the results were not long-lasting.
The erection was gone before I could get into bed.
Next I tried a pill which was placed inside the urethra.
It felt like it should work, but again, it didn't.
I did not get the results.
As an absolute last resort, I tried an injection of a liquid into the side of the penis.
I was scared to death to use a needle on myself down there.
The needle is extremely thin and once you understand how to get yourself ready after the injection, it is great.
Once you have the erection after the injection, the effects last for a couple of hours.
My wife seems happy with the results after the injection.
I had to learn how to optimize my opportunities for sexual performance.
At night, or when I am tired or frustrated, it's harder to perform.
After prostate removal, I found that urine was more likely to leak unexpectedly when I was tired.
Leaking is embarrassing and not very romantic.
Prepare yourself and your partner so you can respond in a more relaxed manner if this happens.
After getting divorced from my first wife, I met a wonderful women who treated me like a complete man.
I consider myself a sensual person and recognized that in me.
She opened my eyes to new sexual experiences and encouraged me to express my desires.
She showed me how good sexual experiences could be and focused her attention on touching and sensuality.
Sensuality is about gratification of the senses and we have five of them to gratify.
I met her six years ago and now we're married.
I also try very hard to make her feel special even if I don't that day.
