- 1). Pull the weeds in the area you want your flower garden to be. It needs to be as weed-free as possible.
- 2). Using a spading fork or tiller, dig up the ground. Add some good compost to the soil and continue to mix this in until finely combined.
- 3). Rake the area to get the soil crumbly. If you see any weed roots, pull them out. Remove any large rocks and hard clumps of dirt. Level out the ground as best you can with your rake.
- 4). Lay a cane or the handle of the rake across the garden bed. Gently press down on the handle to create a shallow depression in the soil. This procedure is termed as a drill. This works to make a row for the small seeds. For large seeds, use the edge of your hoe. To find the correct depth for your row, check the back of your seed packet.
- 5). Using the sprinkle head of your hose, moisten the row you just made with water.
- 6). Look at your seeds. If seeds are small, carefully sprinkle them on top of the ground in the depression you just made. Make sure they are thinly scattered. Using your hands or the flat edge of the rake, gently cover the seeds with dry soil. Press the soil down so the seed will have good contact with the soil.
- 7). Plant larger seeds such as sunflowers or sweet peas in a row that is deeper. Sow these to a depth of around an inch and space them 3 to 4 inches apart. These you can pick up one at a time and space out appropriately.
- 8). Shove a stick or some kind of marker at each end of the rows, so you know where your flowers are. At one end, place a label so you can remember which flowers you planted there.
- 9). Water the area gently. Use a sprinkler nozzle. If you do not, you may wash the seeds out of the row, or push them deeper into the ground. Do not let the soil dry out, but don't keep the soil soggy wet either.
