About.com Rating
Levi/Werstler is an instrumental side project formed by Daath guitarists Eyal Levi and Emil Werstler. Cynic drummer Sean Reinert along with bassist bassist Kevin Scott and keyboardist Eric Guenther round out the lineup. Avalanche Of Worms is their debut.
I'm not generally a huge fan of instrumental albums. While the musicianship can be stellar, one listen is usually enough because the songs simply aren't compelling enough to warrant regular rotation.
Avalanche Of Worms is an exception. Levi/Werstler are outstanding players, but didn't make this a shred album packed with guitar wankery. Instead, songs like “In Amethyst, Through Moldavite” are dynamic and varied, but still have structure and melody that resonates with the listener.
A couple of highlights are the opening track “Noxious Vermin, My Friend” and “Loathsome Little Fiend.” The latter has plenty of intricate guitar work, along with progressive interludes and effective use of atmosphere. There are times where the album drags and I found myself losing interest, but something always brought me back.
Avalanche Of Worms clocks in at just 41 minutes, which is a good length. Levi/Werstler get their musical point across and leave an impression without overstaying their welcome. It's an album that will appeal to Daath fans, guitar aficionados, and even those who may not usually dig instrumentals.
