Nickelodeon originally launched in 1977 as Pinwheel. The network changed its name in 1979. Nicktoons were a hit with kids, but plenty of adults loved watching them, which helped boost their ratings and their cred in pop culture. Then, in 1999, Nickelodeon debuted what would become arguably the most popular kids' cartoon around the world --Â SpongeBob SquarePants.
