Loss Leaders
Many stores try to entice parents and students to shop at their stores during the back-to-school season, which typically peaks in August. These stores will price at least one item at a rock bottom price to lure shoppers. By taking advantage of these loss leaders and avoiding spending money on higher-priced items, you can save a lot of money on school supplies.
Research Prices
Make a master list of all supplies needed during the school year. Next, research the lowest prices for each item at local stores or online. Purchase each item from the lowest priced store or website, making sure that you don't spend too much on postage or transportation to nullify your savings. If you are buying online, see if free shipping is offered for purchases. If the gas or shipping would negate the savings, compare the overall purchase price from each store for all items. Buy all the items from the store with the lowest total price.
Strength in Numbers
Look into buying school supplies in bulk from a wholesale dealer if you need to buy for multiple students. Or, go in together with a friend to buy for more than one family. Share the shipping or postage costs to keep the savings without having to store multiple years' worth of school supplies.
