Every year, new Halloween costumes are manufactured based upon that year's popular movies and this year is no exception.
By far the Avatar movie provides one of the the most exotic and interesting costumes to wear due to the characters unusual appearance.
If you have not yet seen the movie, try to see it before October 31st so you'll know what these blue creatures showing up at your door represent! Avatar is definitely a one of a kind movie experience.
The story line is not unusual (good versus evil), but the execution, artwork and special effects are superb.
The main character, Jake Sully is a disabled military man who is called to the planet Pandora to replace his deceased twin brother in a new science program.
They need Jake because his DNA matches his twins' DNA.
The native people of Pandora are posing problems for enterprising (read greedy) corporations who are are taking advantage of a benevolent scientist that has discovered a way to interact with the population by using Avatar bodies.
These bodies look identical to the natives who are large blue creatures with tails and huge expressive eyes.
Jake signs on but ends up working both sides of the fence.
Initially he is anxious to help the corporations and military to move the native people from their sacred Home Tree so the corporations can mine the rich ore beneath the surface, in exchange for getting his legs back in an expensive medical procedure which the military leader promises to provide.
Of course, interactions with the natives, called the Na'Vi, leads to the opening of a deeper understanding within Jake and ultimately love between Jake and Neytiri, the Na'Vi chief's daughter.
In the end, Jake recovers not only his legs, but his heart.
Whether you loved this movie or not, there is one thing for certain: the hot item for Halloween in 2010 will be the Avatar costume! Both children and adults will be dressing up as their favorite Na'Vi characters and the costumes are truly fantastic.
The guys can dress up in a full Jake Sully costume that has Jake wearing human clothes but his blue tail gives away that he is in Avatar mode.
The wigs supply the long black hair braids and luckily you have your choice of wearing a mask or applying blue makeup to achieve the blue striped Na'Vi skintone.
For women, especially those with great figures, the Neytiri costume makes it appear you have truly achieved the Na'Vi body and the Neytiri wig completes the illusion.
Since children's costumes are also available, your whole family can look like you're visiting here from Pandora! This is an excellent choice for Halloween, as the lessons in the movie are about not letting greed overcome our compassion and tolerance for others, as well as how self-sacrifice to help relieve others' suffering will ultimately result in what we want as well.
It's a great story of compassion and courage and doing what's right, so dressing up as these characters is emulating these higher qualities of the human (and Na'Vi) spirit.
