- Many of the u-pick apple orchards in the state are located near the town of Ellijay. This city located 1 1/2 hours north of Atlanta and 1 1/2 hours south of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the north Georgia mountains. The region of the state has lower humidity levels than southern and central Georgia so apples picked there tend to have a crispier texture.
