- 1). Prepare your equipment before you set out to take pictures. Methodical preparation is key when using any kind of recording device and never more so than when getting ready to use a chewing gum spy camera. Fully charge the batteries. Most cameras will store enough power to run for about two hours. Make sure the memory card (most chewing gum cameras do not have built-in memory) is empty. Locate the on/off switch and the hold button so that you can easily push them just prior to shooting, It may be necessary to do this by feel through the packaging, depending on what kind of situation you find yourself in. If the camera has multiple functions, make sure it is pre-set to the one you wish to use (still, video, audio, etc.). Prepare your camera as if you are about to shoot and then turn it off to conserve the battery.
- 2). Package and conceal your camera once it is fully ready to capture images. How you do this will depend on the degree of concealment you wish to achieve. If you are planning to shoot through the chewing gum packaging, make a hole in it that lines up with the camera lens. Check the viewfinder to make sure you can take a whole clear picture without obstruction. You may have to trim a wider hole. If you plan to remove the camera from the package to shoot, make sure you can slide it in and out without fumbling. Some cameras come with devices that will hold the camera in place or allow you to shoot remotely from a controller. Think through the action of removing the camera from your pocket or purse and rehearse the mechanics. You will be glad you did if you have to shoot in a hurry or on the fly.
- 3). Transfer, label and store your photos properly when you are finished shooting. This data is potentially valuable, so be sure to protect it from loss or corruption. Most chewing gum spy cameras will transfer the contents of the memory card automatically when you connect the camera to your computer with a USB cable. Storage software should download automatically the first time you do this, but more expensive models may follow different protocols. Read the instruction manual thoroughly.
- 4). Choose the right camera for your purpose. Kids take to espionage naturally, and inexpensive cameras are on the market as "toys"; these cameras can be used to take pictures discreetly or surreptitiously. On the other hand, professional micro cameras that are small enough to be concealed but have advanced features and settings can be readily found with a much higher price tag. The extent and manner in which the photographer wishes to pursue clandestine photographic activities will determine the model and price point of the chewing gum spy camera to purchase. As with all purchases, buyer beware. Do your comparison shopping thoroughly, either on the Internet or at a spy equipment store, and be sure you understand how the device is operated before buying it. Check the return policy and, if possible, take it out for a test shoot.
