- You can fix the common problem of squeaky door hinges by removing the hinge pin with a hammer and screwdriver. Rub the pin with a piece of steel wool, and lubricate all the parts of the hinge with WD-40. Replace the pin, and say goodbye to the squeak.
- A very cheap fix to a common problem that is actually costing you money the longer you allow it to remain unaddressed is the addition of weatherstripping to a window. Adhesive-backed weatherstripping is very affordable and fairly easy to install. Secure the strip in place, and peel off the adhesive tape before pressing it into place. This one little fix will serve to conserve energy and save you big money on your energy costs over the long term.
- Fixing small holes that can occur in the drywall as a result of horseplay or rearranging furniture is a simple process involving a tube of caulk. Apply a small dab of caulk onto the tip of your finger, and press it into the crack or indentation. Ensure that you fill the hole, but don't allow any residue to build up on the surrounding surface. Look for shrinking during the drying process, and apply a second coat if necessary.
- Get a pair of scissors, and cut out a patch of wallpaper from your leftover stock. Remove torn wallpaper using a utility blade, and place the replacement patch over the empty area. See that the patch is aligned properly with the existing pattern that surrounds it, and tape the patch over that spot. Apply adhesive and stick it to the wall, smoothing it in place with a moist sponge.
- Mix some tooth-whitening toothpaste with mineral oil. Apply to a whitish stain on your hardwood floor, and buff the finish with a cotton cloth. If this mixture does not cause the stain to disappear, you can fix the problem by using automobile polish mixed with mineral oil.
- Scrub the interior of your gutter around a hole that has appeared in the gutter using steel wool. Use a pair of metal snips to cut a patch of metal flashing that is slightly larger than the corroded section of gutter. Spread asphalt flashing cement on the back of the metal patch, and press it into place. Smooth out oozing adhesive, and seal against leaks at the joints using caulk.
