- 1). Complete a two-year master's degree program in areas such as psychological testing, special education, psychology or counseling. Take courses in educational assessment, applied behavior analysis, instructional technology, educational research and curriculum/instruction.
- 2). Assist with the selection of textbooks and curricula at the school for which you are working as an instructional strategist. Attend staff development sessions and perform classroom visits to see how teachers at the school are implementing staff development topics and using the school's chosen curriculum.
In addition, review teacher lesson plans weekly to make sure teachers are following the school district's curriculum, and give teachers feedback on areas in which to improve. Provide model lesson plans for teachers who need additional help with incorporating learning topics in the classroom. Meet with school principals to share your observation findings. - 3). Administer and interpret diagnostic student evaluations such as social, perceptual and intelligence tests. Diagnose the learning disabilities of students and encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
Also, interview parents and/or teachers of select students to obtain adaptive behavior data, and participate in special education eligibility determinations and individualized education plan staffing when indicated. - 4). Be prepared to fill in as a school administrator when the school's principal is not on campus. Promote parent involvement at school and communicate often with parents, students and central office administrators on the progress of students and teachers in meeting classroom objectives.
- 5). Maintain assessment data required for school district and state department of education reports. Also, help with the inservice training of school teachers on topics such as learning styles, dealing with exceptional children, intervention strategies and classroom management. Cooperate with personnel at community health and social service agencies when they must get involved in student affairs as well.
