- 1). Place a large pumpkin into a sink basin. Dampen a sponge and apply 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap. Wash the entire exterior of the pumpkin with the soapy sponge to remove any dirt and mud. Rinse the pumpkin clean, and dry it thoroughly with a towel.
- 2). Set the pumpkin on a table covered by newspaper. Insert a kitchen knife, at a 45-degree angle, into the top of the pumpkin, 3 to 4 inches from the stem. Cut all the way around the pumpkin with the knife until you reach the starting location.
- 3). Grasp the stem, and twist it until the top comes off the pumpkin. Use a spoon to scoop out the fiber and seeds from the pumpkin.
- 4). Pick up the nursery pot the mums are in and try to set it inside the top of the pumpkin. If needed, enlarge the hole in the pumpkin until the pot slides in easily.
- 5). Pour 1 to 2 cups of water into the mums to keep the soil damp.
