- 1). Invite at least two other people to attend your flag retirement ceremony. You will need assistance holding the flag for proper disposal.
- 2). Fold the flag in half or smaller so that it can be easily held without dragging on the ground. Hold the flag and say something about it. Describe what it has meant for you to fly it or how you came into your possession. Essentially, you are eulogizing the flag as if it were a person.
- 3). Open the flag and have your assistants hold it, making sure no part of the flag touches the ground.
- 4). Cut the star field from the flag. Place it in a secure pocket or ask someone to hold it.
- 5). Cut one stripe from the flag, fold it in half or smaller so it is easy to carry. Place the stripe on the fire. When the stripe has been safely consumed, return to the open flag and repeat the procedure until all the stripes have been burned.
- 6). Lay the star field on the fire last.
