- 1). Stratify seeds -- or refrigerate them in cold, moist conditions -- to grow sycamores from native seed. Refrigerate them for at least 30 days at 41 degrees Fahrenheit to simulate natural over wintering conditions. Store stratified seeds in mesh bags in a cool, well-ventilated area.
- 2). Prepare the planting site. Select a location that is moist with rich well-drained soil. The American sycamore requires a large amount of moisture to grow and thrive. An area with partial shade is most desirable as well.
- 3). Rough up the surface of the ground where you intend to plant the seeds. Let the tines of the rake create shallow furrows.
- 4). Scatter the seeds loosely onto the soil, keeping a few inches between each.
- 5). Lightly cover the seeds with any soil loosened by the rake. Do not tamp the soil down.
- 6). Mist the planting area with a light spray from your garden hose or watering can.
