Problems of Pakistan Railways and Its Privatization

Today almost all government corporations of Pakistan are in worst shape but Pakistan Railways is in really bad condition and costing country huge loses every month.
For more than a century the railroad was the dominant form of land transportation in much of the world.
It was, and still remains the economic backbone of a country.
Railways in sub-continent were developed by British rules for their own strategic purposes.
After Independence in 1947 both India and Pakistan inherited the railway systems.
Indian Railways (IR) has staged a dramatic turn around in recent years.
Railways minister of India (2004 to 2009) transformed the IR from a loss making organization, at the verge of bankruptcy to a profit making business.
Pakistan Railways (PR) is in dismal condition and due to the financial problems many routes already discontinued.
The ongoing floods added to the misfortune.
Several hundreds km of railway line have been washed away.
It has a total of 220 passenger trains/locomotives and the department has decided to shut down 102 trains due to financial loses.
Today Pakistan Railways with Rs.
334 billion liabilities is at the verge of bankruptcy because of corruption, shortage of locomotives and losses incurred due to the running expenses.
According to one report Rs 21 billion is spent on wages and pensions every month leaving the department less or nothing for maintenance of power and rolling stocks.
Followings are my suggestions to improve the condition this department; 1- First of all government should eradicate the corruption in organization.
Corruption is the menace that is destroying many sectors of Pakistani society.
2- Pakistan Railways should be privatized.
Only this is the solution of problem because currently government of Pakistan has to bear the huge losses monthly.
Other benefits of privatization of Pakistan Railways include the increase in service quality and expansion of Railways because government has nothing to invest in PR.
3- Bureaucratic hurdles should be removed from PR.
4- Government should look at Chinese for help in order to make it profitable organization because china makes wonderful progress in railway industry.
In conclusion, the best solution of this problem is the privatization of Pakistan Railway.
We can take the example of PTCL; before privatization PTCL's monthly losses were in billions.
Today it is not only a profitable organization but also providing excellent services to the customers.
Corruption is Pakistan Railways can only be removed by privatization of Pakistan Railways.
