Hip and Groin Pain

    Causes

    • Injuries frequently seen in the hip and groin include hernias, muscle strains, contusions, fractures, dislocations, stress fractures, and labral tears.

    Evaluation

    • After injury it is best to consult with a physician, who will perform orthopedic tests and possibly order diagnostic imaging, such as an x-ray or MRI.

    Treatment

    • Rest, ice, compress, and elevate the area following injury. This helps reduce swelling and pain. Rehabilitation should follow to strengthen and provide additional support.

    Considerations

    • Continuing with normal activity on an injury may cause further, more serious damage. Be sure to consult a physician in the case of any acute injury, or if pain persists after gradual onset.

    Prevention

    • Before being physically active, do a proper warm up. Also, improve overall strength and flexibility. When starting a new exercises program, start gradually, and always use proper form when lifting weights or performing other exercises. Wear proper protective equipment if playing sports.
