Available with leaf colors ranging from chartreuse to deep purple, Japanese maples are widely used as ornamental specimen trees. Preferring partial shade, adult trees reach 15 to 25 feet. Their leaves tend to be so deeply lobed as to appear almost lace-like, although other types are more remarkable for the ornamental qualities of their bark. - Very tall--ranging from 50 to 80 feet at maturity--the Japanese Zelkova is suitable as an ornamental as well as a shade tree. Its bark peels to reveal orange patches, and the leaf color change is showy in autumn. This tree prefers moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Established trees are tolerant of wind, drought and air pollution.

Japanese dogwoods are attractive small ornamental trees, rarely reaching beyond 20 feet in height. Pink dogwood is so named for its profuse pink blossoms, which turn to red berries in the autumn. This variety requires full sun. Leaves of the 'Wolf Eyes' variety turn from green-gray with ivory borders to pink in autumn, also producing berries. This variety prefers partial sun. Dogwoods are deciduous and require regular watering, especially during dry periods. Japanese dogwoods are slow-growing trees. - Another small ornamental, the Japanese Snowbell Tree is remarkable for the pendulous white flowers that hang from horizontal branches. This tree slowly reaches 20 to 30 feet in height, requiring partial to full sun and constantly moist soil.
