How to Keep Dogs From Slipping Out of Collars

    • 1). Measure the circumference of your dog's neck. This will tell you what size a collar should be. Add at least two inches to the measurement to allow room for growth or adjustment. Remember that a puppy's neck will grow, so you should consider purchasing a bigger collar to save money later on. You can add additional buckle holes if you need to.

    • 2). Purchase a collar for your dog based on the dog's neck measurement plus two inches. There are different types of collars to consider. Regular flat collars, made of nylon or leather, are appropriate for everyday wear. Most dogs can wear these on walks as well.

    • 3). Adjust the collar around your dog's neck. Place your pointer and middle fingers flat on your dog's neck and tighten the collar around them. The two-finger rule gives your dog plenty of room to breathe. At the same time, the collar will not be loose enough to slip over your dog's ears and allow it to escape.

    • 4). Fasten the collar. You will find collars with different types of fastening mechanisms. Some simply buckle while others are adjusted by sliding plastic or metal pieces along the collar. Buckle collars are recommended for safety reasons, as the sliding collars can tighten and choke your dog if they get caught on a fence or tree.
