- Evergreen magnolias are found in warm climates. The tree's dense branches form a pyramid shape and produce big creamy-white fragrant flowers. Leaves are long, leathery and dark green.
- Magnolia roots are sensitive so plant where the tree will be undisturbed. They require well-drained soil that is rich with a neutral to slightly acidic pH level.
- Plant transplants from fall to winter in Southern climates. Dig a hole that is twice the depth and width of the root ball and put enough soil or compost in to enable the tree to be planted at the same level it was in the pot.
- Magnolias need water, especially when just planted. Supplement rain by watering deeply several times a week, but do not let water gather without soaking into the ground.
- Mulching will keep moisture in and insulate the roots from high temperatures. Use dried leaves, which fall all summer long.
- Prune only the side branches of the tree, leaving the bottom ones to grow. This will enable the tree to have its pyramid shape. Stop pruning when it blooms and resume when flowers fade.
