Nutrition Experts Predict Top Nine Nutrition Trends For 2009

Although the most important issue of 2009 will be the changing economy, we expect at least nutrition trends that will affect food and wellness companies.
In light of the present economy, consumers will be making choices to down shift their lives and their food purchases.
However, they will still spend, although not as much as they had done in previous years.
Living on a budget and frugality will be in and lavious, extravagant purchases are expected to be out.
NutriTalk(TM), Inc.
believes that the marketplace has evolved to fit the ever-changing needs of consumers who are time-pressed, budget-conscious, youth-seeking and often heavier than they were last year.
As a result, their nutritional choices have changed as a response to today's shifting landscape.
Take a look at NutriTalk(TM)'s top 9 nutrition trends for the new year.
Trading Down - In today's economy, consumers are stretching their food dollars much further.
Instead of regularly splurging on treats, such as gourmet coffees and restaurant meals, many families are returning to the family table with home cooked meals.
Magazines and the cookbooks will emphasize cooking meals such as stews, soups and casseroles that are economical.
In addition there will be a resurgence of brown-bag lunches to save money and focus on more healthier food choices.
Spotlight On Wellness and Prevention - The health of the nation needs to be improved but consumers want personalize health care to fit their lifestyle,, not one size solutions, like exercise plans or diets.
Instead, consumers want everything personalized and served "their way.
" Clinical Research Focus On Obesity- For better or worse, people are looking for drugs and foods as a prescriptions for health problems, such as obesity.
Although consumers are aware that exercise and helpful eating need to go hand in hand, they still are looking for pharmaceuticals or functional foods to get them healthier, and younger faster.
Sustainability And Green Movement - We believe that this year eating green will transition from small movement into mainstream as more Americans are concerned about sustainability.
The term "eco" will be more prevalent on labels.
Increase In Prepared Foods - Although many people will cook meals at home, there is a growing population of cooking illiterate who want prepared foods that they can heat and serve or assemble at home to create a family meal, without cooking from scratch grandma may have done in the 1950's.
More Private Label Products - To stretch their food dollar, Americans are searching for private label foods that are usually cheaper than their name brand competitors.
These are not the private label brands of the past, since consumers desire foods that are functional, such as offering calorie burning, mood food, digestive health, and weight management.
Increase In Pre-Packaged Food - Consumers want nutrition fast and easy.
Time-saving food products and quick meals are important in today's fast-paced marketplace.
They also want pre-portioned foods to control their weight, like 100-calorie packets of cookies and crackers.
Organic and Free-Range Foods - Expect to see even more foods and beverages that are organic or free-range.
Consumers who spend money on organic foods, which are higher in cost than their non-organic versions, usually expect to get more of the things that they want, such as nutrients, and less of the things that they do not, such as pesticides.
However, studies have shown that as far as nutrition is concerned, though, they could be paying extra for little, if any, additional benefit.
Locally Grown Cuisine - Part of the "green movement" is eating less processed and more natural, whole foods.
As consumers aim for more locally grown foods they are becoming "locavores" who  often are motivated back to kitchens and family tables to celebrate regional, seasonal culinary cuisines.
As part of their trend there is resurgence of a local farmers' markets.
