How to Use Electric Clippers on a Dog

    • 1). Bathe your dog, thoroughly washing his hair with dog shampoo. Rinse with copious amounts of water, removing as much dirt and debris as possible. Rub the freshly washed coat briskly with a towel to dry and then keep the dog indoors until his hair is completely dry.

    • 2). Place your dog in a comfortable position and turn on the clippers. Point the blades away from the dog and allow her to inspect them briefly. This gives your dog a chance to adjust to the unfamiliar buzzing noise the clippers make.

    • 3). Use your hands and your tone of voice to calm your dog as you bring the clippers toward the base of his neck. Hold the blade at a 45-degree angle and move the clippers smoothly along the back, working with the grain of the hair.

    • 4). Guide the clippers along your dog's body, pausing periodically to clean the blades. Remove any hair, grime, dirt or debris that may have accumulated in the blades by brushing with an old toothbrush or wiping on a paper towel.

    • 5). Brush your dog to remove any loose hairs and then inspect her coat, looking for uneven spots or places you may have overlooked. Go over the coat again after brushing to ensure a smooth, finished look.

    • 6). Use a pair of small, sharp scissors to trim up hair around your dog's feet, ears, tail, anus, genitals and underbelly. These sensitive areas require greater precision than is possible with standard clippers.
