- 1). Examine the area around the ATM carefully. Take note of any suspicious devices you see. For instance, if you notice two or three surveillance cameras instead of one, it is a good idea to notify the bank personnel. Skimmers install special hidden cameras designed to monitor you as you enter your PIN code at the ATM.
- 2). Check the slot where you slide your ATM card. Skimmers insert a small piece of plastic inside the regular card slot, and that plastic piece grabs the information from the magnetic strap as you slide it through the machine. Grab the plastic slot where the card goes in and rock it back and forth a few times. If you feel anything loose or moving, you may have detected a skimming device.
- 3). Hold your hand over the top of the ATM keypad as you enter your PIN. This precaution can shield your PIN from any surveillance cameras placed at the ATM by skimmers.
- 4). Report your suspicions to the bank manager or to the owner of the store if the ATM is located in a retail establishment. Tell them you suspect a skimmer is in place, and ask them to investigate the problem.
