How to Take Care of a Boston Terrier Puppy

    • 1). Be aware of health issues affecting Boston terrier puppies, including hypothyroidism, cataracts and tumors of the skin. These puppies are also prone to breathing problems due to their short faces.

    • 2). Take a firm but gentle approach to house training the Boston terrier puppy. They have a bit of a stubborn nature, which sometimes makes training difficult. A dog training crate, appropriately sized for the puppy, can be helpful in this task.

    • 3). Exercise your Boston puppy with short walks. This breed does not require a lot of exercise.

    • 4). Begin socializing your Boston terrier puppy at an early age. While generally friendly, Boston males can sometimes be territorial toward other dogs.

    • 5). Remove any hazards that can accidentally harm your Boston puppy's eyes. This breed has large, protruding eyes that are susceptible to injury from items, including overgrown bushes, plants and high grasses. Puppies love to romp in the grass, but for Boston puppies this can be problematic.

    • 6). Clean your Boston puppy's eyes with a soft, damp cloth to remove any dust and debris and prevent infection to its delicate eyes.

    • 7). Keep your Boston terrier puppy indoors. They do not tolerate extreme temperatures of hot or cold.

    • 8). Be prepared for the possibility of flatulence in your Boston puppy. Some dogs of this breed are particularly susceptible to excess gas. The mouth breathing of this short-faced breed contributes to this. Sometimes switching food to one with no corn will diminish this problem.

    • 9). Groom your Boston puppy with a weekly brushing to remove loose hair. A wire brush works best. A monthly shampooing should be enough for this puppy, which has minimal grooming needs. Do not bathe your puppy until it is at least 3 months old. Up until this time, it can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth.

Brush your Boston puppy's teeth regularly. The Boston has crowded teeth, growing at odd angles, which can trap food particles, leading to dental disease. Getting the puppy used to this procedure while still young will make the job easier as it grows.

    • 11

Wipe the loose folds of skin around your Boston puppy's face with a soft cloth to prevent bacterial buildup in the moist tissue.

    • 12

Keep your Boston terrier puppy in trim shape. This short-faced breed is known for breathing difficulties. Excess weight increases the problem. Begin a healthy feeding regime early to ward off future problems.
