The importance of trees cannot be emphasized enough and with more construction and eradication of forests, here's a way to contribute to the ecosystem; by planting more trees.
Three deciduous trees planted to shade the south, southwest, and southeast of your home can reduce your air-conditioning bills by 10 to 50 percent.
Windbreak rows of conifer trees to the northwest of your home can considerably reduce heating costs.
Shading your outdoor air-conditioning condenser will also increase its efficiency.
Protect the seedling from damage by lawn mowers, pets, etc.
and water as needed to keep it from drying out, especially during its first summer.

- Choose a tree at least 5 feet or 6 feet tall grown to nursery standards.
- Plan to plant in a place with enough room so that branches and roots can reach full size.
Avoid overhead and underground utilities. - Measure the root ball.
- Prepare a planting area as deep as the root ball and 3 to 5 times its diameter by loosening the soil.
- If needed, blend in soil amendments throughout the entire planting area.
- Dig a hole in the middle of the area and set the root ball even with the ground level.
- Use water to settle the soil and remove air pockets in the planting area.
Do not pack down the soil. - Stake the tree to flex with the wind only if tree is unable to stand up to wind.
- Spread a 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch on the entire area, but not within 6 inches of tree trunk.
