How Ocuplasty Surgery Stands Atop Conventional Eye Surgeries

Ophthalmology is the branch of medical science that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. And an ophthalmologist is a specialist and a surgeon who treats various eye problems using surgical and non-surgical procedures. Oculoplasty surgery is a newly emerging sub-division of ophthalmology that is widely used by ophthalmologists in treating severe diseases of the eyelids, orbits, and lacrimal system.

Oculoplasty surgery is a cosmetic surgery that is also known as corrective and or reconstructive surgery of the eye that cures and corrects all kinds of abnormalities of the eye lids and the facial areas near the eyes. It is majorly used for curing diseases like entropion, ectropion, tumors in and around the eyes and ptosis, and repair facial defects like droopy eyelids, eye brow lifts, eyelid lifts, inject-able fillers, cheek lifts, botox, tear duct obstructions, orbital-face fracture repairs, and eyelid reconstruction and more.
Various medical conditions cured with the help of oculoplasty surgery include-

1. Entropion - Entropion is a medical condition in which the eyelid gets folded inward, where the eyelids/eyelashes constantly rub against the cornea causing itching and discomfort. In severe cases of entropin, where patients often get through traumatic stages and get their eyelids and nerve damaged and never reacts to medication, may require a surgical attention. This is where eyelid surgery that is a part of oculoplasty surgery is the right solution. This condition majorly affects people in their sixties or seventies.

2. Ectropin - It is a medical condition in which the lower eyelids turn outwards. Generally, it occurs due to weakening of tissues surrounding the eyelids and this issue is fixed surgically. Major causes of ectropin include aging, scarring, mechanical abrasion, allergic, facial nerve palsy, and anti-cancer treatments such as erlotinib, cetuximab, and panitumumab, which block the function of EGFR (the epidermal growth factor receptor).

3. Ptosis (Eyelid) - Ptosis is a drooping or falling of the upper or lower eyelid causing blurred or disrupted vision. It generally affects those individuals, who awake for longer period of times, and when their eye muscles do not get sufficient rest. This condition is also known as 'lazy-eye'. However, these symptoms should not be neglected and should be treated at an early stage, or it may worse the condition causing amblyopia or astigmatism. Amblyopia is a severe form of Ptosis, where the vision becomes blurred or decreased and may not get treated for a lifetime, depending upon the severity of the disease.

Despite various medical reasons, droopy eyes are one of the major reasons why some people prefer cosmetic oculoplastic surgery (Blepharoplasty) over other cosmetic surgeries. Droopy eyes are a condition when excessive skin gets accumulated beneath eyelids making eyes look smaller than their original size. Blepharoplasty helps removal and tightening of excess eyelid skin that results in hiding wrinkles and other signs of aging while giving people an attractive youthful appearance. This procedure is also used to remove excess skin, muscle and sometimes fat from the upper or lower eyelids.

As per the latest survey conducted by a group of ophthalmologists in Mumbai, many people suffering from various diseases of the eyelids, orbit, eye-ducts, and the face, have benefited form oculoplasty surgery and speak highly about this emerging surgical procedure.
