Lutein - What is It?

Lutein is an essential part of our eyes.
It is the main component of the retina and plays a major role in our eyes' ability to form clear and crisp images.
As we age, our eyes begin to lose focus.
Some people even begin to have blind spots in their central vision.
This is happens due to the deterioration of the macula in our eyes, which is otherwise known as Age-related Macula Degeneration, or AMD.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin (which forms the central part of the retina) have been found to be very effective in preventing AMD and cataracts.
It also protects our eyes from the high energy blue light from the sun rays.
There are many other benefits of this nutrient.
It is a strong antioxidant and protects the body cells from free radical damage.
As free radicals play a significant role in causing cancer, lutein doubles up as an anti-cancer agent too.
A study in China has shown that it can protect our eyes from the damage caused by long term exposure to a computer screen.
The most common sources of lutein are green leafy vegetables like spinach, cabbage, kale, green peas and broccoli.
It is also found in egg yolk and animal fats.
The problem is, though these vegetables are high in all kinds of nutrients, the taste quotient is very low in them.
That is why most people do not eat them in a regular manner, despite being aware of their health benefits.
The solution might be to take a nutritional supplement.
As these supplements are chock full of essential nutrients, just a couple of capsules a day might be enough to provide all the health benefits of these nutrients.
No need to load your plate half-heartedly with green vegetables when your heart is set on that delicious steak! A word of caution here - supplements are meant to do exactly what their name suggests - supplement your diet with necessary nutrients.
They should always be combined with a balanced diet to get the maximum health benefits.
The best part is, a good supplement will contain other natural ingredients which work well in synergy with each other.
For example if lutein is combined with zeaxanthin and zinc, together they provide much more protection against AMD.
In conclusion, look out for a nutritional supplement that provides your body with lutein and other natural ingredients.
It may be the best decision you take for your eyes.
