- 1). Cut your pine tree stump as close as possible to the ground with a chainsaw.
- 2). Dig a trench around the base of the stump to expose the roots. Use a pointed shovel and make the trench at least 12 inches wide and 8 inches deep.
- 3). Cut the roots near the base of the stump with a handsaw or a chisel and hammer. Place the chisel against a root and hit the end of the chisel with the hammer, forcing the blade of the chisel through the root. Sever all visible roots.
- 4). Wedge the shovel under the stump and force it up to loosen the cut roots. Continue to dig around the stump in the trench to locate roots that are not yet severed.
- 5). Sever any roots still attached to the stump. Cut the roots close to the stump to make lifting the stump less difficult.
- 6). Remove the stump from the ground once it shifts easily and the majority of the roots are severed. Lift the stump with a pointed shovel wedged under the side of the stump, working around the perimeter of the stump to eradicate the entire pine tree stump. Cut small remaining roots with a handsaw or loppers as the stump comes out.
- 7). Fill the hole with the removed soil and add topsoil as needed.
