- 1). Plant Melaleuca alternifolia in a potting mixture that uses coir, a fiber made from coconut husks. This will help the plant retain moisture while still allowing good drainage. A potting mixture based on peat may not offer the the drainage that Melaleuca alternifolia requires.
- 2). Water Melaleuca alternifolia often and thoroughly without water-logging the soil. The soil should never become dry as this plant does not recover easily from drought. Adequate water is especially critical for Melaleuca alternifolia when it is exposed to hot air from a heating vent.
- 3). Control the height of Melaleuca alternifolia by pruning the tops with pruning shears and limiting its container size. This tree can easily grow to 15 feet in height if you allow it to do so. Melaleuca alternifolia is normally an evergreen plant if you keep it indoors.
- 4). Keep Melaleuca alternifolia in a sunny window. This plant grows best with a large amount of direct sunlight, such as that available from a southern window. Keep a tray of pebbles with water near the plant to keep it from drying out in a warm location.
- 5). Fertilize Melaleuca alternifolia regularly with organic fertilizer according the manufacturer's instructions. This plant can benefit from fertilizer throughout the year and organic fertilizer will not cause damaging salts to accumulate in the soil. A Melaleuca alternifolia plant that is not getting enough nutrition will tend to shed its leaves excessively.
