When designing your home it's very important not to forget to create space for relaxing. Many of us will focus so much on creating rooms for particular purposes - whether that be eating or working - that we will forget to create anywhere to just relax. And no, by relax I don't necessarily mean 'watch TV' - I mean actually sit down and spend some time just being quiet and reflecting on your thoughts. A 'zen space', if you will.
The garden is absolutely perfect for this for many reasons. For one, it won't regularly get messy and untidy because you won't have many items in your garden to leave out or to get messy. You don't cook in the garden, and nor do you play games or otherwise spend a lot of time doing anything that requires a lot of junk (if you do have a lot of junk in your garden then make sure you use a shed or some other space where you can easily store it).
At the same time gardens are great for getting away from it all because they are away from the rest of the house. You can go to the garden, close the doors and then have some peace and quiet without the kids calling to you from wherever they are or without the phone ringing every two minutes.
Then there are all the peaceful aspects of being in the garden. There's the cool breeze, the sun, the chirping of the birds - all of it is perfect for just relaxing. Though to get the most from it you need to design your garden correctly. Here we will look at some ways you can do that.
Use Decking
Using decking is very relaxing for many reasons. For one it means there's less work to do and your garden won't look overgrown and messy half the time. Meanwhile decking will also give you a solid surface which will be more suitable for standing garden furniture and which will allow you to head outside in slippers or bare feet.
Furniture
The garden furniture you choose is important to help you relax. Make sure it's comfortable of course, and add a few different items so that you have facilities for sun bathing, sitting and reading and anything else you want to do outside.
Shelter
While it is an irritation a lot of the time, there are actually few things more relaxing than the rain - or at least the sound of rain. If you really want to make the most of your garden for relaxation purposes then you should use a sheltered area so that you can sit outside even when it's raining. That way you can read a book and enjoy a cup of tea while listening to the sound of the rain as it patters on the roof above you.
Water Features
When it's not raining you can still benefit from the relaxing sound of water - just use a water feature somewhere in the garden which will lend a nice ambient sound as well as refracting the light in hypnotic ways.
