-ability to accept criticism from others and willingness to do extensive rewriting

Other essential qualities of a journalist include being tactful, confident and organized while interviewing people from all walks of life, will power, understanding, knowledge of languages, accountability, sharp memory, etc.

Journalism in India has been constantly evolving with times-from printed weekly to bi-weekly to daily newspapers; from hourly news on TV to 24 X7 news channels; from news online to receiving updates on mobile to news from social media. Media is a very dynamic industry that keeps on growing and widening with the changing times and technologies. The work of a journalist involves reporting, writing, photographing, broadcasting, editing, and cable casting the news. There are several courses on undergraduate and postgraduate levels that offer certificate, diploma and degrees to aspiring candidates. These media courses teach and train individuals on the technicalities of the profession but updating yourself constantly in the persistent need for journalists.

To get a journalism job in India, you need to be well educated on the intricacies of the profession though most media houses understand well that you will learn the most of it on-the-job. Holding a journalism degree from a reputed mass communication institute helps in getting a higher pay scale. The career graph for a journalist starts from reporter to senior reporter to chief reporter to sub editor to editors and so on.
