Morning of 8th February 2009 was the morning marked by the Hong Kong Marathon organized by Standard Chartered Bank. This is the annual race held in February in Hong Kong. There is a full marathon, half marathon and a 10 km race marking the Standard Chartered event. Marathon being the hallmark of perseverance and unity did a splendid job in bringing the Hong Kong city together.
The number of runners participating in the Standard Chartered Marathon this year was a historic total of 55,000 runners. Although marked by the highest number of runners all time was the number of darters who got hurt which was 371 in count.
Winner of Hong Kong Marathon 2009 men's race was Cyprian Kiogora Mwobi setting a new record on Sunday. He finished the entire 42.195 kilometer race within the span of 2 hrs 14 minutes and 57 seconds which is pretty remarkable of an achievement. The winner under the women's title was Winnie Frida Kwamboka Nyansik who led the race from the starting line to the glorious finishing line within 2 hours 41 minutes and 25 seconds. Both the winners of the Hong Kong Marathon were from Kenya this year.
There were few intriguing finishes from the Philippines runners Sunday morning during the marathon:
Finishing 5th in the league of Men's marathon was Eduardo Buenavista, setting a record of the first non-African to reach the finish line with the clocked time of 2:18:53. He was trailing by Cyprian Kiogora Mwobi of Kenya by 4 minutes. Also among the top 20 in the women's league of Half Marathon was Luminas Liezel who set across the finish line within 1 hr 32 minutes and 36 seconds.
The Standard Chartered Marathon this year was by far the most interesting one marked by several engrossing events like this 35 yr old Choi Tat-ming who finished the 10 km race in less than 35 minutes and then took the MTR to start off with another race of the half marathon and finished 10th among the runners of his age group.
Fishing for more grapevine news? There have been Chinese rumors that boyfriend of Joyce Cheng, who is the daughter of famous actress Lydia Shum was the winner of 10 km race who set his foot across the distinct finishing line within 34 minutes and 15 seconds.
No event is outright over till there is something negative to gossip about and this years Hong Kong Marathon was no exception. There were few qualms regarding the way the refreshments were being taken care of. In totality there were about 70,290 bananas, few 80,600 chocolates and energy bars and 57,525 pears in the edibles and 95,000 litres of water to quench their thirst. There was mismanagement recorded because not every runner went out happy with the supply of refreshments.
But nonetheless, Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2009 was an accomplishment worth registering and looked upon with pride & glory.
