Stylish Herb Garden in a Metal Bucket

Sometimes the simplest gardens are the most beautiful. This herb garden was planted in a large metal bucket, also sometimes called a wash tub. You can get these at a hardware store. They aren't expensive and they last pretty much forever. I have old vintage wash tubs that are ancient and though they are banged up and rusty, they still look very hip.

Make sure to bang lots of holes in the bottom of your bucket.

I use a large nail or awl and a hammer and when I'm done the bottom looks like Swiss cheese there are so many holes.

My only caution when using a metal container is that in direct sun, it can become searingly hot. You can burn yourself if you touch it in a blasting mid-day sun. The plants can also be burned. If you live in a hot area, consider placing it somewhere where it will be protected from the mid-day sun. I also sometimes line metal containers with fabric or bubble wrap. If you can find one that fits, you can also put a plastic pot inside the metal pot and hide the edges either with moss or draping plants.
