Types of Sedation Dentistry

Wouldn't you love the option to be able to sleep throughout your entire dental appointment? Also, wouldn't it be nice to be finished with your appointment, and not remember much about what happened-thereby reducing anxiety and dental fears for your next appointments? Well, you are in luck! With the advancements in the dental field, dentists around the world are now able to deliver safe and effective forms of sedation dentistry.
Some patients are more suitable for one sedation method versus another, but your dentist will make that decision based on many factors.
Such factors can include your current health status, your current medications, your allergies (to any medications), and your health history.
Most dentists understand that many people have dental fears and anxiety.
Actually, some patients can be traumatized from experiences they had at the dentist when they were growing up, or when going to the dentist as an adult.
If your dentist understands your past, he or she will be able to better decide which sedation dentistry method is best for you.
There are many forms of sedation dentistry that dentists can utilize.
These include:
  • IV sedation.
The sedatives are delivered directly into your bloodstream via an IV.
This can sometimes put the patient in such a relaxed state that he or she might even fall asleep during their dental appointment! You will still be able to respond to the dentist and his assistants, though.
  • Oral conscious sedation.
With this option, dentists prescribe a specific amount and type of anti-anxiety pills for you.
You usually take the pills approximately one hour before your dental appointment.
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas).
This sedation dentistry method can be used alone to relieve anxiety and fear, or it can be used in conjunction with the other forms of sedation methods.
These are actually the most common forms of sedation dentistry.
They are delivered in a safe and effective way from a trained and specialized dentist.
The main purpose of sedation methods is to allow the dentist and his or her assistants to perform the procedure quickly and effectively, while keeping you relaxed, comfortable, and pain-free.
During your sedation appointment, your dentist will monitor your vital signs, and make sure that an effective and safe amount of sedative medications enter your system.
Sometimes the dentist must regulate the amount to ensure that you remain safe, comfortable, and pain-free during your appointment.
Since sedation dentistry involves a specific amount of medication entering your body, be sure that you trust your dentist, and that he or she is highly skilled and trained in delivering sedation dentistry methods.
