- 1). Fill a pot with a light, well-draining soil. Your local nursery or garden center can help you select one.
- 2). Mix a solution of 3 tsp. 5 percent chlorine bleach and 1 tbsp. trisodium phosphate (TSP) cleaning agent into 1 qt. of warm water. Soak the seeds in the solution for 15 to 25 minutes, then rinse them off under cold water for five to 10 minutes. This helps make the seed hull softer and kill any diseases on the seeds.
- 3). Place the seeds in the soil about 1/4 inch deep, keeping them at least 3 inches apart.
- 4). Add enough water to the soil to keep the soil damp, but not soaking wet.
- 5). Place the pot on top of a heating pad. You can purchase a heating pad that can get wet from a pharmacy, or purchase one that is specially designed to grow plants.
- 6). Check the soil temperature daily. It should be between 80 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Give the plants at least 12 hours of light daily. If you cannot provide enough natural sunlight, place them under an ultraviolet light.
- 7). Place the plants in separate pots when they begin to develop leaves. Begin adding fertilizer or plant food to the soil.
