How to Create Church Logos

    • 1). Decide what the logo needs to say. Without using words, the graphic design can say many things about your ministry. What you want to communicate will shape the design strategy.

    • 2). Choose a type style that compliments the message. A young, urban congregation might use a font that supports the feeling of being contemporary and cutting edge. A traditional church could use a type style that reflects a sense of tradition and permanence.

    • 3). Avoid using a type style that is trendy or hard to read. The overall logo design may have only a few seconds to make an impression, so the design should be clean, with crisp lines that reproduce well in any type of media, from print to video.

    • 4). Position a slogan beneath the church name. If your organization name is the title, the slogan is the subtitle. This should be a message you will be comfortable with for the long term. Think of how your mission statement could be best expressed in a few words.

    • 5). Add a symbol. Churches can employ obvious religious symbols but risk that symbol being perceived as cliché. An effective logo includes a symbol that supports the primary theme. For example, light can be expressed as a simple flame element. A simplified illustration of hands can be used to convey prayer when folded, or praise when outstretched.

    • 6). Use the proper design tools. Logos should be designed with vector-based graphic design software. Vector graphics allow the design to be scaled up to any size without loss of quality. Consider the need to place your logo on a 20-foot banner as well as a letterhead.

    • 7). Make the logo permanent. While ministry themes and even mission statements may change over time, the church logo should not. Consider the investment in everything the logo will appear on, from signage to television advertisements. Once implemented, changing the logo will be costly and undo the identity and recognition established over time.
