- 1). Mow your grass regularly so that it is between 3 and 3 1/2 inches in height. This prevents Bermuda grass from receiving enough light and resources to grow.
- 2). Fertilize the lawn in the late spring and early fall, using the correct amount of fertilizer for your grass variety. Water the grass after application.
- 3). Mulch exposed areas with little grass, such as gardens and areas under trees, to prevent further spread of Bermuda grass. Apply a 3-inch layer of mulch.
- 4). Apply a contact herbicide such as Triclopyr to suppress the growth of the weed and to prevent seed growth, recommends Utah State University Cooperative Extension. Apply according to the packaging instructions, making applications every four weeks throughout the season.
