Instructions for Canfield Solitaire

    Set Up

    • All you need for this game is a deck of 52 playing cards. Start by dealing 13 cards face-down in a vertical column. The last card of this column should be played face-up. This stack is known as the reserve, or the demon.

Next deal one card face up to the above right of the demon. This is called the base card and begins a row of four cards (the other three played later) called the foundations. The base card will be the basis of the rest of the foundations.

Deal four face-up cards, aligned underneath the base card and foundations. This is the tableau. The rest of the cards form the stock, where you will draw cards from during play. Next to the stock is the waste pile, where cards not played will be placed.

    Play

    • Flip three cards at a time from the stock into the waste pile. Cards can only be played from the top of the waste pile. Cards can be played on the tableau in descending order with alternating colors. For example, if the tableau is the queen of hearts (red) the cards that can be played are the jack of clubs or spades (black). The cards can "turn the corner" from Ace to King. This means that if you have a red ace at the bottom of your tableau, you can place a black king on top, wherein the order continues to descend.

As you reveal cards, you will come upon cards of the same value as the base card. These cards will be placed onto the foundation immediately. The foundations build in ascending order of the same suit. For example, if you have a six of spades as one of your foundations, the only card you can play there is the seven of spades. You can turn the corner with the foundations as well.

The demon can be played on the tableau or foundations, when appropriate. As soon as the demon is played, flip the next card over in the reserve to take it's place.

Once all your cards are in the waste pile, turn over the deck and replace it as the stock. Don't shuffle. You can restock the stock as often as you want.

    Winning

    • Winning
Play continues until you have placed every card on the foundations, or until you run out of available moves. Reshuffle and try again.
