Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny are four kids on an adventure to run away from a grandfather they have never met when their parents have somehow died.
All they seem to know about their grandfather is that he didn't like their mother and never came to visit them.
So they believe he doesn't like them at all.
Their first stop in the story is a bakery where they buy bread.
They are allowed to sleep there but over hear the baker and his wife talking about splitting them up so they get up in the middle of the night and run away from the bakery as well.
By the third chapter they have found their boxcar and made a new friend, a dog Benny names Watch.
The four brave resourceful children set up a wonderful camp making do with what they could find in the woods and a nearby dump to create a comfortable home for themselves.
Henry the oldest goes into the nearest town and works for a doctor doing yard work and such.
The doctor sorts out who Henry and his siblings are but doesn't report them immediately.
He checks out their camp when they are not there to make sure they are okay but when Violet gets sick he brings the children into his home and notifies their grandfather.
For those of you who have not read the book yet I won't tell what happens next.
This is a great story for young readers it shows independence, resourcefulness and courage that can be a really good example for young readers.
I remember when I first read this book in the third grade...
I kept it checked out all year I didn't want to let it go! I don't know how many times I read it that year but I do remember how much I loved it from start to finish.
Re-reading it again this last week was so fun and brought back so many fond memories for me.
I hope you enjoy the book and share it with your young readers.
Please leave a message for me if you did enjoy it, I would love to hear your thoughts on this old friend of mine.
I have a new book club starting on my website so feel free to come join in and let me know if you have any suggestions for future books we should include in the club.
