- 1). Open the windows and doors in the adjacent room to increase ventilation. This will reduce any odors coming from the clothes closet. Use a fan to increase ventilation if the air does not circulate sufficiently.
- 2). Put on gloves and a mask. This will protect your hands and help prevent nausea if you encounter offensive odors.
- 3). Start with the top shelves of the closets and bring down all the items. Sort through them and discard anything not worth keeping. Continue working from the top of the closet to the bottom until it is empty.
- 4). Vacuum or sweep the bottom of the closet. Use a carpet cleaning machine on the carpet or carpet spot cleaner to remove stains.
- 5). Combine one part bleach and four parts water in a spray bottle. Wash the shelves and walls with the bleach solution and a cloth. Allow the surfaces to air-dry. Bleach kills bacteria, mold and any lingering odors.
- 6). Wash any items that are salvageable and return them to the clothes closet.
