- 1). Create the background for the bulletin board by hanging a large world map. You can also create your own version of a large world map by hanging blue construction paper and drawing the outlines of the continents with marker.
- 2). Draw a line, in red marker, tracing the route that Columbus took from Spain to the Caribbean.
- 3). Make three ships out of construction paper. Place them somewhere along the red marker line (Columbus' route). Label the ships "Nina," "Pinta" and "Santa Maria."
- 4). Create a banner from cutout letters that reads "Columbus Day." You can also put the date if you want.
- 5). Let younger children color pictures of ships and sign their names on them. Hang the pictures on the bulletin board, and arrange them however you wish. For instance, place sporadically across the board, or neatly arrange along the border.
- 6). Assign older children to write a one-page essay from the point of view of a crew member on the Nina, Pinta or Santa Maria. Wait under after school when students are not present, then singe the edges of the papers with a match or lighter to give them an old look. Hang them on the bulletin board when you're finished.
