- Dress up like the Mystery, Inc. gang from the TV show Scooby-Doo, which still exists today in movies and cartoons. Buy costumes at a shop, or put them together from items you may have at home. Fred typically wears a white-collared shirt, jeans and a red ascot. Shaggy is more casual in a green T-shirt and brown pants, while Daphne sports head-to-toe purple, typically a dress and high boots. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, skirt, knee socks and shoes. The parts of her costume can be different shades of orange. For extra fun, take along a real dog to be Scooby.
- Have your group dress like they all walked out of a time machine from a certain era. A group of '60s hippies wearing tie-dye and bell bottoms, a bunch of 1950s greasers and poodle skirt girls, or some gangster-era 1920s folks would make a splash at a Halloween party. Make the costumes different depending on each person's taste, but make sure they all tie in to the common theme.
- There are plenty of characters to choose from in the "Star Wars" movie series, from the iconic Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker to Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Let everyone pick a favorite character from the classic films to embody. Take a couple of kids along dressed as Ewoks, the teddy bear-lookalikes who inhabited Endor in the film "Return of the Jedi." Another option for a child would be R2D2, Luke Skywalker's android robot.
- If you grew up playing Clue or still play it now, you know how much fun it was to pretend to be the characters in the murder mystery board game. Dress up like the Clue crew for real by doing your own interpretations of Miss Scarlet, a seductress wearing red, or Mrs Peacock, an elegant older woman. Miss White is a servant wearing a maid's outfit, while Professor Plum and Colonel Mustard are proper gentlemen. Put on some glasses if you are Professor Plum. Mr Green is a businessman. Make others guess who you are, and don't forget to take some props along such as a rope and a candlestick.
- Grab a group of six friends and dress up as the Seven Deadly Sins. For Greed, someone could tape fake money all over herself. Lust could dress seductively. Envy could dress in green to represent the phrase "green with envy." Gluttony can be holding a bunch of junk food and sweets, while Sloth could have unfixed hair, no makeup and ratty clothes. Pride's costume could be a dressed-up, formal look and he could carry a mirror all night and look at himself, or wear some medals around his neck and carry trophies. Wrath can draw on angry eyebrows and dark makeup and dress all in black or red.
