On the 19th of September 2014, FPD Technical Assistance District Healthcare Management Conference delegates visited the K.T Motubatsi clinic in Shoshanguve, Pretoria. This is the clinic where the Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi launched the mom connect project. The clinic has been identified as the best model clinic, in line with the ideal clinic standards, by the National Department of Health. The clinic achieved 90-95% of the standard regulations set by the National Department of Health (NDoH). The clinic also provides full Primary Health Care (PHC) service package including Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC).
Patients visiting this clinic get the best public health care experience, almost equivalent to the private sector. The clinic is divided into different blocks according to the services provided to the patients so that they don't have to stand in long lines. The mother and child block is also divided into 2 sections according to the services needed by the patients so that the staff can be able to deal with emergency cases promptly. When patients arrive at the clinic, they first go to the help desk where they are given a service number, then they proceed to reception where they will be directed to the relevant service block. Initiatives like these have led to the reduction in waiting period in the facility, meaning that patients spend less time in the facility.
The clinic has an integrated filling system which makes it easy to access patient files and it also has a pre-booking system where patients are provided with a date for their next check-up and the dates are set according to the clinic rooster. The facility also has a rehab block where chronic patients are treated. The block includes the following professionals of physiotherapist, speech-therapist, dietician, optometrist and a medical social worker.
The nurses are qualified to treat all patients; this ensures that all patients are given the same treatment. Each consulting room is equipped with the basic equipment to treat patients and they also have a dispensary. Patients with special needs and those who need further treatment are transferred to the nearest hospital.
K.T Motubatsi clinic has a fully equipped pharmacy which uses the RX system that makes it easy for the clinic to order medication and to keep track of their budget, their stock, and their orders. €Having a pharmacy in the facility allows us to provide quality services to the community because we are able to issue medication to patients instantly, we send medication to the chronic block and we refill medication in the consulting rooms,€ said Angie Baloyi, a Post Basic Pharmacy Assistant.
Throughout the year K.T Motubatsi has been visited by facility managers from other regions to learn and adopt the strategies used by the clinic to implement and achieve the standard regulations set by the NDoH. It was to witness the suited day to day operations of the clinic.
