Years ago my husband and I were in a bad place and all I could ask my friends was, "help me save my marriage." Now, I am happily married to the man of my dreams and my life could not be more perfect. While we still occasionally disagree on some things we are both very happy with our life, but it was not an easy road. Saving a marriage that is in crisis is difficult and requires both sides to be completely honest and willing the make changes.
The first step to helping you save your marriage is to talk openly with your partner about what is bothering you. Sometimes, your spouse might not even know they are doing something wrong. It is important to remember that everyone has different customs and something that you dislike may be a normal part of your spouse's life. Being able to talk openly and honestly about your relationship is vital for the long term health and well-being of your marriage.
Another important part of saving your marriage is finding time to spend with your partner. We tend to have very busy lives, especially when you are both working and have children. One of the best things I ever did for my marriage was to schedule a date night once a month and to find at least 5 minutes to spend alone together every day with no distractions. This date night and 5 minutes per day allowed us to spend time together away from distractions like the television and talk to each other about what is going on in our lives.
Stop living like roommates and start living like a married couple. Sometimes when couples are in a rough patch they will start treating each other like roommates and forget that they are actually married. While this may seem difficult it is actually very easy to do! First, start cooking and eating dinner together as much as possible. While two busy adults can't always eat together you should be able to find a few nights per week to make a good home cooked meal together. Another fun activity is planning the meals and going to the grocery store to pick out fresh meat and vegetables. Plus, you will be eating delicious food and saving quite a bit of money!
One of the biggest things that helped me save my marriage was remembering why we love each other. It felt like we got into the routine of fighting about almost everything imaginable. Instead of fighting we started to talk to each other and found common ground and made compromises. One way we saved our marriage was to start going back to the places we went on our first dates. While we now live on the other side of town many of the places are still there. It is always a fun trip to go back to the restaurant or park and see what is the same and what is different from the last time you visited.
Saving a marriage can be tough, but it is important that you do not give up on your love for each other. If you are interested in more information about how to save your marriage check out this book. It really helped my marriage feel like we just fell in love again.
