- 1). Pick a spot for your barbecue pit. Once you've decided where you want it, dig up the soil with a shovel. The hole needs to be wide enough and deep enough to fit the tire rim in its entirety, all the way to its top.
- 2). Place the tire rim into the hole, packing the loose soil around it to keep it snugly in place.
- 3). Wet the soil on the floor of the bbq pit with water and firmly press down on the soil with your hands. This will make the ground more level, which is ideal when you're barbecuing.
- 4). Arrange landscaping rocks around the perimeters of the pit for decoration, and to keep the rim snug in its place.
- 5). Pour 8-10 pounds of charcoal into the bbq pit and saturate with lighter fluid. Light with a match.
- 6). Place the grill rack on top of the fire pit once the flames have burned down and the coals are red hot. The grill rack or grill grate needs to be at least two inches larger in circumference than the tire rim, so that it will rest on top securely.
