- 1). Contact the electricity company. Inform the customer service agent of your request to change the name on the electric bill. If services are currently active this can be done without an interruption. The person whose name is currently on the bill can request a changeover date. You would request for the services to be placed in your name on that date. A technician would go out to read the meter on that particular day to end and start service in the new name. You will be assigned a new account number with the activation of new service.
- 2). Provide identification if this is required. According to the Federal Trade Commission, "the FACT ACT 2003 wants all public utility companies to implement a written "Identity Theft Prevention Program" designed to detect warning signs or "red flags" of identity theft in their day to day operations." Providing identification not only protects the company from any liability but also protects you as the consumer from identity theft. The "red flag rule" becomes mandatory December 31, 2010.
- 3). Fax or mail over a copy of your lease agreement or go into a local office with a valid ID card if this is required. Some companies will also accept a notarized application or landlord affidavit. Requirements of what is acceptable can vary, so check with the local utility company in your area.
