- 1). Cut a hole in the bottom of your hanging basket with a three inch diameter. Don't try to make your cut perfect. Just approximate and cut out a hole large enough to thread your plant through.
- 2). Cut a piece of wire mesh (screen material will do) or plastic mesh so it's diameter is two inches larger than the hole you cut. This helps keep the dirt from spilling from the bottom of your basket.
- 3). Cut a two inch slit in the center of your mesh. Place it over the hole you cut in your basket from the inside.
- 4). Start inside the basket and gently work the leaves and stem of your pepper plant through the slit until the root ball touches the bottom of your basket and the stem and leaves hang freely from the bottom of your basket.
- 5). Fill the basket with moist potting soil and hang in a location where it will get full sun for at least eight hours per day.
- 6). Water to help establish the root system and help the soil settle around the root ball. It's easier to water once you hang the planter because it becomes heavy when wet.
- 7). Plant flowers or herbs in the top area of the basket if desired.
