Most of us have these unsightly holes and tears in our carpets caused pets, cigarette burns or torn seams.
Before you decide to replace or hide these unsightly areas take this opportunity to save some cash and fix your carpet yourself.
I'm going to walk you through some basic techniques to repair the blemishes instead of covering them up with an area rug or furniture.
I have been in the carpet / rug cleaning and repair industry since 1996, I have personally repaired over 40,000 carpet blemishes.
The following advice will get you through small repair blemishes, but for larger more severe tears and blemishes will need experienced hands to complete the repair to a like new condition.
Tools Needed: (if you feel uncomfortable using any of the following tools please call a professional) 1.
utility knife 2.
metal straight edge or ruler 3.
sharp scissors 4.
hot glue gun 5.
glue sticks 6.
seam tape All tools can be purchased at your local hardware store, and always respect sharp tools.
For small holes or cigarette burns: first step is to cut out the affected ares in a square using a metal straight edge and utility knife.
Secondly, with a donor piece of carpet from remnants (must match) or from a hall closet cut out a piece of carpet using the affected areas as a guide.
Then place seam tape under carpet at area to be repaired, cut seam tape to size with scissors for an easier fit.
Next, fit in the donor piece of carpet and trim down with sharp scissors to insure an exact fit.
lastly, once you know it's an exact fit, spread the hot glue from your glue gun under the carpet repair area and also on the backing of your donor piece and set in place pressing down lightly (pressing too hard will over spread the glue causing to squeeze out of the edges).
For tears or small seam repairs: Small tears cased by sliding furniture or minor seam coming undone can be easily fixed.
For torn areas simply put a strip of seam tape under carpet through the torn area and spread hot glue with glue gun evenly.
Next squeeze the seam together with fingers insuring a tight fit.
For loose seams without major frays you can use the existing seam tape.
First cut away and frayed carpet or strands, and then glue seam back down using hot glue gun and squeezing seam together tight.
For major repair work that might be beyond your abilities and or confidence you should hire an expert in carpet repairs.
